Groundspeed

Employee Spotlight: Evan Daywell

Meet Evan Daywell, our Senior Manager of Document Processing at Groundspeed. Evan has been with Groundspeed for over 6 years and leads the Document Processing Automation team as they build systems that accurately extract information from insurance documents and transform the data into a structured format.

What is your favorite part about Groundspeed?
The collaborative culture we’ve built – every person on my team knows and trusts their colleagues and their perspectives on the problems we solve. When working remotely, it’s essential to know that your teammates are just a slack message away and happy to think something through together. Collaboration is valued across the company, and it helps us improve our product daily.

What are you most proud of during your journey with Groundspeed?
I am most proud of being a part of a place where many people have grown their careers. There are many people, myself included, who joined Groundspeed at a junior level and were able to find opportunities to learn and build their capacity and take on more responsibility and senior roles over time. Joining Groundspeed was transformational for me, and it feels great to be part of a company that does a good job supporting that kind of personal growth. It’s also cool to look back on a bunch of scrappy nerds who wanted to automate loss runs and see the success and impact we’ve been able to make in the industry.

What do you think is the future of Commercial Insurance Underwriting and the role of Groundspeed in shaping that?
In the future, underwriters will expect access to data across their current and potential book of business in a consistent, complete, and convenient format. With access to this data, underwriters can build metrics and benchmarks, automate simple decisions, ask better questions, and focus their attention on the parts of the business that the numbers don’t capture. Groundspeed is in an excellent position to provide the data, expertise, and platform for enabling this shift.

What would you say to someone considering a career with Groundspeed?
Groundspeed is a great place to solve interesting problems with a supportive team. The insurance domain is fascinating and complex, and it takes a lot of different roles working together to do what we do. If you like to learn on the job, work remotely in close collaboration, and are interested in picking apart the data roadblocks right at the heart of a huge industry, then Groundspeed might be a good fit. Currently, we are looking for a solutions engineer and many other roles to join the Groundspeed team – Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3z8fvN4

Can you share a fun fact about yourself?
I am a life-long resident of beautiful Ann Arbor with a background in mathematics, molecular biology, and small-scale organic farming. I was once featured in the New York Times Magazine harvesting garlic.

Evan, we are happy to have you on the team at Groundspeed!
